At the UNIX Awards that were held as usual this year at Uniforum, a rather interesting thing happened. Dennis Richie was there to present the lifetime achivement award. After the normal short speech he announced, in front of 1000 or so of the most important people in the UNIX Industry, that Judge Debevoise was the winner. Roel Pieper was on stage not ten feet away at the time. Unfortunately, he was joking (the real winner was Bill Joy). [I wasn't in the room, I was in the entryway/bar with much alcohol in hand waiting for the Open Systems Today party after the awards. I'll post party reviews for that and the other parties when I figure out the appropriate newsgroup.] Rob Kolstad was asked by John Muster (the owner of Lurnix, where I work) how suprised he was about Dennis's quip. To quote : "Almost as suprised as when my wife told me we were pregnant." -george william herbert gwh@ocf.berkeley.edu gwh@lurnix.com Member, SAGE From: gwh@soda.berkeley.edu (George William Herbert) Newsgroups: alt.suit.att-bsdi Subject: Re: UNIX Awards Highlight... In any case, Rob Kolstad isn't married, as he let me know this morning. Sorry, Rob. Seems to me that this just implies a much greater level of surprise on Rob's part than you'd assumed - finding out all at once for the first time that you're married and pregnant can be quite a shock, I'm sure. Rob's mail, to be precise, said that he didn't have any recollection of the conversation with John. Ergo, I'm assuming it happened with someone else and John or I got the name mixed up in the pipeline. -george From: tal@Warren.MENTORG.COM (Tom Limoncelli) Newsgroups: alt.suit.att-bsdi Subject: Re: UNIX Awards Highlight... Rob, care to comment? -george (Or maybe we can get the Judge to come...)
